Polyvore is a fashion website that lets users put together outfits and ask questions. Users can create a style collage that includes clothing, footwear, accessories, jewelry and anything else that blends with the collage’s theme. Polyvore lets users work with more than just clothing. Users can also add music, people, backgrounds, colors, frames and effects to create style collages. Others can explore style collages for inspiration. Users can build rep within the Polyvore community by following one another. The “Ask” area lets users pose specific questions and get answers from other users. Questions can be anything fashion related, from what to wear to how to accessorize. Users can also shop for new garments in the “Shop” area. Items are listed in one place and available from many online retailers.

Polyvore was founded in February of 2007 by Guangwei Yuan, Pasha Sadri and Jianing Hu. The application has received a significant amount of attention since it was first introduced, including mentions on many well-known websites. Good Housekeeping magazine’s website referred to Polyvore as “a Fashionista’s Playground.” The application currently boasts an active community that participates in all areas, from asking fashion questions to creating style collages.

Polyvore takes some cues from Pinterest, but only on a very minor level. Rather than act as another themed virtual pinning board, the application gives the user more to see. Users can shop on the site and design their own style collages. The style collages have more visual options that include a unique template as well as text, effects, overlays, backgrounds, and the ability to add magazine articles and frames.

Polyvore has plenty of visual appeal, most of which stays focused on the many eye-catching style collages displayed on the site. The user interface is easy to master and the site feels more like a fashion magazine than an online community. This is a good thing because it gets the user in the mood to contribute their own fashionable creations to Polyvore’s already diverse mix.

New visitors can explore Polyvore all they want, however to access all features the user must register. This can be done by clicking the blue “Register” link in the upper, right corner of the page. A pop up box will appear and invite the user to sign in with Facebook or provide an email address and password. Those who go the email route are automatically signed in and invited to follow other Polyvore users and invite friends through social networks.

Polyvore is available to all users at no cost. The site relies entirely on user participation, so charging a fee would be counterproductive. Users are not required to pay anything, however there is a shopping area available. The user may be enticed to purchase new clothing and accessories however this is not a requirement to maintain an account. The site doesn’t add any fees if the user does decide to make a purchase.

Polyvore is an excellent resource for anyone who loves fashion. Users can design their own outfits, even if they don’t actually own the clothing and accessories they work with. The application provides plenty of room for self-expression and gives the user a place to connect with other fashion-minded individuals. The interface is simple to use and lets users navigate easily to each area quickly.
